Anxiety Neurology

" Anxiety neurology encompasses all neurological symptoms which may be caused or worsened by stress."

stress

Neurological symptoms may either be produced or worsened by anxiety by a variety of mechanisms.

Discover how anxiety may be causing or affecting your symtoms

A mistake often made on the detection of anxiety (and other psychological issues)in a patient with neurological symptoms is to conclude that these psychological issues explain 100% of the problem.

Conversely, patients with a clearly defined neurological condition such as Parkinson's Disease will not have their psychological issues noticed or treated despite the clear effect these issues have on their physical function.

Many symptoms of anxiety may be related to the effects of hyperventilation.

Anxiety and neurology:- Some common examples

The following neurological symptoms may be completely produced by anxiety, stress or other psychological issues.

Sleep disorders (especially insomnia)

Movement disorders (tics,tremors)

Seizure-like episodes known as "non-epileptic seizures"

Headache and other pains

Speech disorders:- forgetting words, voice change

Fatigue and body weakness of any cause including leg paralysis or paralysis of one side of the body:-known as a form of "conversion disorder"

Loss of sensation and abnormal skin sensations
--pins-and-needles
--numbness
--tingling

Urinary complaints

-frequency of urination

-urinary retention

Sexual dysfunction

Blurred vision

Walking difficulty and fear of falling

Dizziness and light-headedness

What this means is that treatments aimed at helping psychological "stress" of any kind can and often do improve the above symptoms whether or not the psychological issues are worsening or causing the neurological symptoms.Such treatments include social manipulation (e.g. obtaining financial assistance), psychological interventions ( relaxation techniques , hypnosis, psychotherapy etc) and sometimes drug treatment.
