Stroke or stroke-like symptom
A stroke or stroke-like symptom is a sudden loss of neurological function presumed to be due to a problem in the blood flow to the brain (cerebrovascular system). The following, when they appear suddenly (seconds to a few hours) are common symptoms of having a stroke:-
1)
Weakness
on one side 2) Speech difficulty 3) Double vision 4) Loss of vision in one eye 5) Loss of co-ordination on one side 6)
Numbness or tingling
on one side. Although some of these may be a symptom of another, benign or less dangerous condition such as
migraine
,they should be taken seriously and prompt an immediate visit to the ER as most stroke treatments such as
thrombolysis or "clot-busting"
need to be given as early as 3 hours from the start of symptoms to be effective in preventing
disability.
Although some stroke-like features may occur in other conditions such as
multiple sclerosis
the suddenness of onset of the symptoms should alert both patients and physicians to the possibility of stroke.
